“I describe myself as having ‘severe middle child syndrome.’ As an extrovert, I love all the attention! I get along with just about anyone, which is how I fell into my side gig as a DJ and trivia host. My friends and I would play trivia, and over time, I became friendly with the host. Then, I became the host! I really enjoy being around people and their banter.
Growing up, I was drawn to legal shows and movies—'My Cousin Vinny’ was a favorite—and I imagined becoming a defense attorney. I’m close with my dad now, but as a child I didn’t see him a lot because of his work schedule. I always knew quality time with my family was my priority, so law school is on hold for now.
When I was earning my degree in history from Kutztown University, they had a program that also allowed you to earn a paralegal certificate. I regretted not pursuing it when I had the chance, and it weighed on my mind up until eight years later when I was laid off from my warehouse job. Then, I knew the time was right. My DJ gigs kept me afloat financially, so I was able to earn my paralegal degree from Northampton Community College in two years.
I learned about paralegals in child welfare from my older sister’s friend, Helene, who also works at Voce. Honestly, I didn’t expect to like it so much. My paralegal team is such a cohesive unit. We depend on each other when we need feedback or a sounding board. They even come out to trivia night once a month! I want to feel good about what I’m doing and I’ve found that here.
Feeling good matters. Three years ago I was tipping the scales at 450 pounds. I was toxic to those around me, carrying weight not just physically, but mentally, too. I had to get healthy to be the dad I wanted to be for my son, Declan. I started eating healthy and got into running. Finishing my first 5k race was emotional. I’ve done a bunch of races since and will be competing in my first half marathon this November.
I’ve always been a go-getter. I’ve had to remind myself at times to let ‘good enough be good enough.’ My experiences, job, relationships, health, fatherhood…my life is a net positive. I may not have pictured myself here, but it’s a great place to be."
