We Are Voce: Brooke's Story

Before coming to Voce, I worked as a court reporter and an administrative assistant. This job is so different from other jobs I’ve held. Everyone wants to be here, making a difference. I’m coming up on my one-year anniversary as a paralegal, and it’s really cool working in the legal field and doing something that matters.

I went to Penn State and earned my degree in communications and pre-law. I knew I wanted to put my knowledge to use. When I applied for the paralegal job, I wasn’t familiar with child welfare. There’s so much that goes into it, and so many services that are wrapped in. What I thought was checkers was 3D chess! It’s truly the most rewarding work I’ve ever done. I love the success stories and when an adoption is finalized. The whole team has a party in our office library.

Outside of work, hula hoop is my latest fun hobby. I was inspired by a video showing hula hoop tricks and it just looked so beautiful and freeing. It seems like as we grow up, we consciously throw things aside that we once loved because they’re considered childish. These days, I’m less concerned with what people think and more about staying true to myself. The world record for hula hoop is 100 hours. I’m up to 45 minutes and plan to keep going! Harvey, my three-year old rescue ‘puppy’—all 104 pounds of him—is very encouraging. I also enjoy hiking and yoga, and I’ve thought about becoming a volunteer fire fighter. Seeing that anything is possible for kids is very inspiring, so who knows, maybe that’s what’s next for me.
