A few weeks ago, in conjunction with the Child Welfare League of America’s national conference in Washington, D.C., I joined more than 300 child advocates walking together up the steps of the Capitol to represent the needs of our nation’s children before legislators. In that moment—moving in unison and with purpose alongside others—I was part of something bigger than myself. I was carrying a mission.
As a member of the CWLA Board of Directors, it is a privilege to stand alongside child welfare leaders and decision-makers in the field—individuals dedicated to turning action into policy, and policy into practice. While our roles, organizations and approaches may vary, advocacy breaks down silos and unites us around a shared commitment: the welfare of children.
An advocate is not simply a well-intentioned bystander, but someone who takes deliberate action on behalf of the needs and interests of others. Advocacy exists along a continuum, from large-scale organized efforts like those led by CWLA to the one-on-one actions we take each day. Advocates give voice to others, empower people to use their own voices and serve as agents of change.
Regardless of scale, advocacy is driven by values, vision and mission. As a CWLA member organization, Voce participates in conversations focused on the needs of the individuals and families we serve, the strategies required to support them, and the funding necessary to meet those needs. More specifically, we advocate for increased prevention efforts, expanded permanency practices, a reduction in and redefinition of congregate care, and stronger child abuse reporting processes that better identify and respond to abuse, neglect and the broader needs of families.
Joining forces to create positive, lasting systems-level change is an immense responsibility—one that Voce embraces collectively and wholeheartedly. Equally important is the responsibility to advocate through our daily practices, the programs we administer and our regular interactions with partners, supporters and constituents. We believe relationships are key to empowering people to thrive.
Using our voice on behalf of those whose voices are too often silenced or disregarded is woven into Voce’s culture. Join us—real change demands strong voices and bold action. If this message resonates with you, let’s talk.
